Portraits in Miniature
This recital weaves together intimate character pieces and poetic miniatures from the Romantic and early modern piano repertoire. Schubert’s deeply expressive Moments Musicaux converse with the rhythmic charm and folk inflection of Chopin’s mazurkas, before the sound world shifts to the dreamlike elegance of Satie and Debussy, where wit and impressionism come to the fore.
After the interval, the programme turns to the musical landscapes of Scandinavia. Grieg and Sibelius offer works rich in melody and storytelling, complemented by Palmgren’s Nordic lyricism. The recital closes with Billy Mayerl’s Song of the Fir-Tree, a brilliant piece of jazz-syncopation writing inspired by a Scandinavian folk melody.
